Theo Huibers

Theo is an experienced strategic advisor with broad ICT and AI expertise. He joined SMC as a partner in 2024, where he focuses on guiding boards and regulators on strategic issues. He has conducted strategic advisory projects in various sectors, including media, healthcare, education and technology. Theo is known for his analytical, creative, goal-oriented, forward-looking and loyal approach.

Theo started his career in 1992 with his own consulting firm. After four years, he moved on to larger consulting firms, including KPMG. In 2006, he founded his own consulting firm again, called Thaesis. He built the firm into a successful strategic consultancy in Hilversum and left the company in 2019.

Theo is also active as an academic. He started his academic career after graduating in computer science in 1992 as an AiO at Utrecht University. In 1996, he obtained his PhD with research on “an axiomatic theory for studying information retrieval.”

Between 1996 and 1998, he did postdoctoral research at the University of Nijmegen. In 2002, he was appointed professor of Information Retrieval at the University of Twente, where, to this day, he conducts research one day a week on information technology for specific user groups.

Theo currently chairs several supervisory boards. He also lectures at VU University Amsterdam and the School of Leadership.
