Harmen Ettema

Harmen is a highly experienced professional in the field of financial and risk management. A unique aspect of his career is his extensive and varied experience as a supervisor and supervisory director, which he began building at a relatively young age. This early start has led to a deep-rooted passion for good supervision, guiding organizations in strengthening their governance and management.

Before joining SMC, Harmen was a statutory director (CFRO) at safety net insurer Vereende N.V., where he was responsible for restoring and improving management control, with a special focus on the financial and risk functions. Prior to that, he held similar statutory management roles at Nationale Borgmaatschappij, APX Power Exchange, and Coöperatie Intres U.A., specializing in financial restructuring, merger support, and improving the risk management function. In all these roles, Harmen was at the helm during complex transitions and successfully guided organizations through challenging periods. Harmen laid the foundation for his career as a manager at KPMG and as a partner at PwC, where he set up the quantitative advisory group ‘Analytical Intelligence Services’.

In addition to his consulting work, Harmen is active in academia as a lecturer and chair at the Erasmus Governance Institute at Erasmus University. Here, he enthusiastically shares his knowledge with the next generation of supervisors. He is particularly involved in the challenges surrounding effective supervision of ESG strategies and sustainability reporting, as these new perspectives add to the complexity of governance. As a partner at SMC, Harmen uses his extensive knowledge and experience to advise companies and public institutions on strategy realization, good governance, and risk management and control.
